چکیده

We prove conditions for equality between the extreme eigenvalues of a matrix and its quotient: In particular, we give a lower bound on the largest singular value of a matrix and generalize a result of Finck and Grohmann about the largest eigenvalue of a graph. Keywords: extreme eigenvalues, tight interlacing, graph Laplacian, singular values, nonnegative matrix 1 Introduction Our notation is standard (e.g., see [1], [3], and [6]); in particular, all graphs are de…ned on the vertex set [n] = f1; : : : ; ng and G (n) stands for a graph of order n. Given a graph G = G (n) ; 1 (G) ::: n (G) are the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix A (G), and 0 = 1 (G) ::: n (G) are the eigenvalues of its Laplacian L (G). If X; Y V (G) are disjoint sets, we write G [X] for the graph induced by X; and G [X; Y ] for the bipartite graph induced by X and Y ; we set e (X) = e (G [X]) and e (X; Y ) = e (G [X;Y ]). We assume that partitions consist of nonempty sets. In this note we study conditions for …nding exact eigenvalues using interlacing. As proved in [2], if G = G (n) and [n] = [i=1Pi is a partition, then 1 (G) + : : :+ k (G) k X i=1 2e (Pi) jPij ; (1) n k+2 (G) + : : :+ n (G) k X i=1 2e (Pi) jPij 2e (G) n ; (2) Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Memphis, Memphis TN 38152, USA yDepartment of Pure Mathematics & Mathematical Statistics University of Cambridge Centre for Mathematical Sciences Wilberforce Road Cambridge CB3 0WB zResearch supported in part by NSF grants CCR-0225610, DMS-0505550 and W911NF-06-1-0076.

Lecture 5: Eigenvalues of Hermitians Matrices

This lecture takes a closer look at Hermitian matrices and at their eigenvalues. After a few generalities about Hermitian matrices, we prove a minimax and maximin characterization of their eigenvalues, known as Courant–Fischer theorem. We then derive some consequences of this characterization, such as Weyl theorem for the sum of two Hermitian matrices, an interlacing theorem for the sum of two ...

Interlacing Properties for Hermitian Matrices Whose Graph is a Given Tree

We extend some interlacing properties of the eigenvalues of tridiagonal matrices to Hermitian matrices whose graph is a tree. We also give a graphical interpretation of the results. We use the work on matchings polynomials by O.L. Heilmann and E.H. Lieb.

The Number of Interlacing Equalities Resulting from Removal of a Vertex from a Tree

We consider the set of Hermitian matrices corresponding to a given graph, that is, Hermitian matrices whose nonzero entries correspond to the edges of the graph. When a particular vertex is removed from a graph a number of eigenvalues of the resulting principal submatrix may coincide with eigenvalues of the original Hermitian matrix. Here, we count the maximum number of “interlacing equalities”...

Ritz Value Localization for Non-Hermitian Matrices

Rayleigh–Ritz eigenvalue estimates for Hermitian matrices obey Cauchy interlacing, which has helpful implications for theory, applications, and algorithms. In contrast, few results about the Ritz values of non-Hermitian matrices are known, beyond their containment within the numerical range. To show that such Ritz values enjoy considerable structure, we establish regions within the numerical ra...

Graphs and Hermitian matrices: eigenvalue interlacing

Our first aim in this note is to prove some inequalities relating the eigenvalues of a Hermitian matrix with the eigenvalues of its principal matrices induced by a partition of the index set. One of these inequalities extends an inequality proved by Hoffman in [9]. Secondly, we apply our inequalities to estimate the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of a graph, and prove, in particular, that ...
